For all the ‘we’ll be all right Jack’ when it comes to the climate crisis in Northern Ireland - I hope the recent floods have finally proved otherwise to all the naysayers out there.
They include Newry, Portadown and Craigavon, Lurgan, Glengormley & Mallusk as well as Ballymena in the Lough Neagh river basin district; Derry and Omagh in the northwest RBD and Belfast, Carrick, Bangor, Newtownabbey and Larne in the northeastern RBD.Downpatrick which saw serious flooding this week was listed as a transitional area of potential significant flood risk in the latest.
The Strategic Environmental Assessment Screening Report also outlined how officials should take into account the natural characteristics of an area, exceeded environmental quality standards and intensive land-use. Those plans were first published in 2018 and 2019 but the work wasn’t carried out until last year. But I’m struggling to find any more plans to alleviate flood risks since then.
Ripping out nature, tarmacking and paving everything in sight is not helping with surface water flooding - nor is building on just about every piece of greenspace left. It seems to me that some of the best solutions to flooding are also solutions for nature, pollution and the climate crisis. Each home could also have a water but fitted to gather rainwater for plants, reducing the water needs of homes.
