For years, coal miners have occupied an outsized role in the national political discussion, how promises by politicians to restore a steadily shrinking coal industry affect miners’ political allegiances. “What’s happened is not a Trump moment or a Bernie moment or a progressive moment,” said Stephen Smith, at the time a progressive Democratic candidate for West Virginia governor, who joined the miners at the capitol. “What’s happening is an anti-establishment moment and that’s rational.” “What I can do is fill out a meeting request.
