Oldhammers were carried through the rooms of their own homes on the roof of the train while still in bed
Residents of a street in Greater Manchester had an incredibly lucky escape when a train crashed through their houses in the early hours of the morning.
The Manchester Evening News reported Mrs Alice Greenwood, 63, who lived at number 11, was sent crashing through the floor of her bedroom. She was standing in a narrow passage between the only remaining wall and a pile of rubble when neighbours found her. "It was dark and I couldn't see much, but my legs were fast under a beam or the bed. I soon managed to free myself," he said.Believing he had passed out for a couple of minutes, Mr Stenton was awoken by his wife's shouting before two men who lived on the street freed him from the wreckage. Coincidentally, he had also survived an earthquake in Brazil 30-years earlier, which he described as having the same sensation.
