The creative hospitality of post-COVID churches | Opinion
Desperate or creative or a mission from God, it’s sometimes hard to tell.
COVID forced churches to change how they engaged people, forced them into new spaces. We Catholics, for instance, went on television and online. We also found ourselves reexamining how we reached and sometimes didn’t reach people on the margins, the sick and homebound. We learned there were many people who just couldn’t go to Mass and that simply watching it on TV touched them deeply. We learned we needed to do a better job finding them, serving them.
If they can’t get them into the pews, then at least the parking lot; that might be the idea. Maybe it’s simply a good source of supplementary revenue. Harvest Hosts says this can bring a congregation anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 dollars annually. That’s not an insignificant bit of change for a small church.
But that’s also the way churches for most of history have been: mere fleeting outposts of what believers believe to be a kingdom. Congregations of believers have welcomed pilgrims ever since Jesus said they should; and even before that, ever since God reminded the Jews to welcome the stranger. Saint Benedict taught his monks to welcome the visitor as they would Jesus.
