Visit Île de Ré in the low season and stays can be 40 per cent less. Time it right to enjoy warm weather on its tens of beachesI’ve found an island with as many sunshine hours as Nice, but fewer British accents, quieter beaches and, arguably, better seafood. It’s also more laidback, just as chic and, if timed right, better value for money than the

For comparison, a stay at a five-star hotel in Nice starts at around £500 per night. And, while Hôtel de Toiras’s price point is hardly budget, with its French country-house style, antiques and artwork, sumptuous bathrooms and impeccable service, it can be seen as an affordable treat. The following day, I cycle to La Flotte, another of the island’s 10 villages. Cycling is the best way to get around . It’s easy – with more than 60 miles of dedicated cycle paths, plus plenty of cycle racks – and cheap at around £10 for a day’s hire. Every village has at least one cycle hire shop and most only close in winter.“They love it because the island is less busy,” she adds.

Having moved to Ars-en-Ré, with its eye-catching black-and-white steepled church , I spend a day exploring these wilder beaches – Lizay, Trousse Chemise and La Patache – with their untamed golden sands and pine forests. The bus is a useful alternative for moving around the island . But be aware that the bus stops are usually outside the village centres and the service is of an hourly or two-hourly frequency.

I pass wooden benches with packets of the prized fleur du sel for sale and an honesty box – they solve several take-home gifts. I meet 20 or so other cyclists along the way. However, it would be quite different come September, says Didier Le Calvez.
