After all of the chaos that has swirled around Trump for years, it is time to make a clear-headed break with Trumpism.
By Mark S. Singel
At last count, former President Donald J. Trump faces over thirty separate investigations and legal proceedings. Lingering charges of sexual assault have been revived. The Trump organization faces fraud charges in New York that could amount to $250 million in damages. The Department of Justice is assessing the damage done to our national security because the former president walked off with 11,000 documents – some of them top-secret or highly classified.
For the record, the Presidential Records Act makes it clear that all such papers are the property of the U.S. government. Removal of even one document constitutes a felony punishable by fines, imprisonment, and forfeiting the right to hold office again. The next question has to do with espionage and the reason that the documents were pilfered in the first place.
