. It feels good to say that after years spent hiding in the shadows. And did I mention that I was right all along? I’m part of the Centrist Dad uprising, a new, better, more inclusive breed of this often downtrodden and maligned group, now reclaiming the narrative with a knowing head-nod that says: “I told you so”.when Jeremy Corbyn’s former spokesperson, Matt Zarb-Cousin, identified him as a middle-aged man who could not come to terms with the brave new political world.
Over time, the definition has become even more nebulous. There are Coalition-era Centrist Dads as well as Remainer Centrist Dads.to all people. For a time, the term appeared just another stick to beat beleaguered middle-aged men with. As far as I could see, in a Venn diagram, a Centrist Dad sat in the intersection between boomer, gammon, and declaring “Vince Cable was the best Chancellor we never had”.
Indeed, sometimes it’s hard to know if you are a Centrist Dad or not, as nowadays you neither have to be male nor a father to qualify. You could be a Centrist Dad and not even realise it until your 21-year-old daughter shouts you down for suggesting that maybe unisex toilets aren’t a great idea for everyone.
If you are confused, there are some helpful memes that offer guidance. Apparently, you are likely to be a Centrist Dad if you watch, own an espresso machine, vape, ride a Brompton bicycle, or wear heavy-knit shawl cardigans. Sounding familiar?takedown of Alistair Campbell, you are also smug, intellectually lazy individuals “who assume that the middle position is always correct”.
