The CDC is investigating a drug-resistant strain of bacteria that caused severe injuries in dozens of patients, including blindness and death. Most infections were linked to the use of contaminated eye drops.
, 68 patients across 16 states have been infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, according to specimens collected between May 2022 and February 2023.
In the most extreme cases, the infection can spread to other parts of the body, including the bloodstream. Three people have died due to infections, the CDC said. At leastfour have undergone enucleation — the surgical removal of the eyeball.
