“Cat Person” set the internet alight. Its writer, Kristen Roupenian, then completely unknown, was hailed as a kind of prophet of modern dating. Many people wrongly interpreted the story as the sort of “personal essay” that was popular at the time . Thousands of women praised its relatability, hundreds of men slated it as “garbage”., which was published in 2019.
