Sources close to Biden say that the search has changed in light of figures like Atlanta Mayor Keisha Bottoms and Rep. Val Demings, both black women who have emerged as leading voices.
. According to Moseley Braun, the first African American woman to serve in the Senate, the unrest is “not just a signal, it’s a cry” from the American public “to move into another direction” and “repudiate white supremacy.”
Bottoms, who says her “complete focus has been on our streets the last few days,” received widespread praise for her sensationalon May 29, during which she pleaded with Atlanta protesters to go home and use their anger to enact change through voting. “When I saw the murder of George Floyd, I hurt like a mother would hurt,” she said, addressing the thousands who took to the streets of Atlanta in response to Floyd’s killing.
Meanwhile, Demings’s ties to Florida, as well as her former role as a police chief and her current role as a Black congresswoman, make her an attractive candidate; as Politico notes, the Biden campaign has “increasingly used her as a surrogate to discuss the complex intersections of these two communities.” Demings told Politico that “to protect and serve, we all need to make adjustments” and that “[some officers taking a knee] know the criminal justice system they work in needs to be reformed.
