Wrap up warm and head outside for a wintry walk
We’re well into December now and although the weather outside can be a bit frightful at times, when we are treated to dry and crisp days it’s a good idea to make the most of it. It can be easy to hunker down inside at this time of year, but an invigorating walk outside can lift the spirits - and makes those mince pies and yule logs even tastier.
Bramhall Park For beautiful scenery on a frosty day, venture to Bramhall Park, which has all the grandeur of a stately home in miniature. At the heart of the park is Bramall Hall, a stunning timber-framed building which looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale. Tucked between Rochdale and Oldham, the park covers an area of around 48 hectares and features a mix of woodland and grassland. What makes this park special are the panoramic views it has to offer - on a clear day you can see the city sprawled out in front of you from the park’s viewpoint.
Today the park is a haven for wildlife and a much-loved green space. Although you can still spot remnants of its industrial park, including the former mill ponds and a stunning weir. Marple Locks to Bugsworth Basin Maple is home to one of the most beautiful stretches of canal in Greater Manchester, and it’s particularly magical on a crisp winter’s day - especially if the water freezes over. For a lengthy seven mile walk, you can follow the Peak Forest Canal from Marple in Stockport all the way to Bugsworth Basin at Buxworth, taking in pretty bridges and beautiful countryside along the way.
