As birthstones go, garnet might be the most misunderstood.
Red garnets are beautifully offset by pale gems, which is why the Victorian ring worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, featuring her own birthstone, garnet, interspersed with the Duke of Cambridge’s birthstone, pearl, is such a beautiful one.
Garnet’s popularity had a peak in the 1800s with the discovery of a rich seam of them in Bohemia, now Czechoslovakia, where it is still mined. Examples of jewellery from the era tend towards large chandelier earrings resplendent with the stones, paste and pearls, set in thin sheet gold – all the better to maximise the effect of the materials.
One of garnet’s most charming traits, however, is that tiny samples of it can often be found by mudlarkers along certain stretches of the Thames, recently prompting the London jeweller Ruth Tomlinson to create a series of rings from them, which she promptly reunited with the river.
