'Perhaps the only thing all humans have in common is the experience of suffering, yet it is also the one thing most choose not to talk about.' Here's why that needs to change.

I was a societal recluse for nearly half my life due to my struggles and lack of support from the outside world. During this time of isolation and solitude, I was able to ponder the ways of the world as well as human behavior. One aspect of society that has always struck me as odd is that perhaps the only thing all humans have in common is the experience of suffering, yet it is also the one thing most choose not to talk about.

Suffering is painful, and like any form of pain, it is our animalistic instinct to avoid it at all costs.

Intense suffering presents a window of opportunity to discover what we are truly passionate about in life. The word itself, “passion,” is derived from the Latin root word “pati,” which means to suffer and endure. When we come upon our passions through our suffering, usually as some type of outlet, they lead us to our purpose, and living out our purpose is key to the continual progression of our individual development. I often say: “Pain, Passion, Purpose, Progress.

We often hear of “living life to the fullest,” yet this energy is oftentimes solely focused on the pleasant moments of life. If we are to truly adhere to this motto, we must welcome with open arms the difficult as much as the easy, the dreadful as much as the blissful, and the sorrow as much as the peace. When we gravitate toward one end of the emotional spectrum while neglecting the other, we skew our existential equilibrium.
