TheBatman cinematographer Greig Fraser explains the film's long-take action scenes: 'I hate to say this, but I kind of have a bit of a short attention span, or I have problems when things become too flashy.'
The Batman cinematographer Greig Fraser has gone into detail on why the film's action sequences are shot in long-takes. The Batman is the newest interpretation of DC's classic hero, and is helmed by Cloverfield director Matt Reeves. The film follows Batman in his second year of crime fighting as he must track down a mysterious serial killer known as The Riddler .
Fraser is a cinematographer with a very impressive resume. Reeves and Fraser have previously worked together on Reeves' fantasy-horror Let Me In. Fraser has also been the visionary cinematographer behind some of the past decade's most epic films including Zero Dark Thirty, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and has even lent his talents to several episodes of The Mandalorian.
"I’m maybe showing my age a little bit here, mate. I hate to say this, but I kind of have a bit of a short attention span, or I have problems when things become too flashy. Maybe it’s not an age thing. Maybe I am the conscious version of an audience member’s subconscious. I believe, and this is if you want the Gospel according to Greig, when an image comes up on screen, it takes you half a second, subconsciously, to work out where you are, what you are, who it is and what you’re doing.
Fraser has gone on to state that he feels that when shooting an action film, there is a tendency to go"Bourne" with them in regards to the actions series' handheld camera work. The Bourne franchise has been, of course, a majorly successful action series for over a decade, and Fraser himself calls the series "legendary when it comes to action set pieces.
Fraser's work on the film clearly paid off, as his cinematography certainly lends itself well to the dark and brooding tone that The Batman filmmakers were trying to accomplish. The overall look of The Batman has been praised since the first trailers were released, and it is certainly the mark of a good cinematographer if their work can be praised after only teasers of it are revealed.
