Giants ranked 2nd in MLB in ERA last year, keyed by their philosophy of working fast and throwing strikes — two areas Gabe Kapler sees the need for improvement this spring.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Ordinarily, the array of flatscreen televisions inside the Giants clubhouse display the club’s spring schedule and workout plan for the day. Maybe a few are tuned to MLB Network, or if they’re lucky, the NCAA tournament.

“Last year, we did all those things well and we won a lot of games,” Kapler said. “There is a very direct correlation between those things.” But rather than relying on ERA and other traditional metrics, which can be notoriously unreliable with the small number of innings pitchers throw in spring training, the Giants wanted to provide their hurlers an “accurate mirror,” Kapler said.

Besides his core group of starting pitchers, who have thrown 16⅓ innings and allowed only two runs, Kapler has expressed his displeasure with the work of his pitching staff so far this spring. His most recent comments came Friday after a 3 hour, 23 minute affair that ended in a 10-2 loss to Cleveland.
