What's in the box!?
Is this anyway to run a government? Every year come budget time the governor and legislative leaders pile into a backroom and slap together a budget so last minute nobody has time to read it before the constitution mandates its passage on July 30. That’s a $54 billion spending bill and nobody is quite sure what the hell is in the thing. I think the secrecy may be more of a feature than a bug.
What’s in this thing? Why can’t we skim it before they start cutting checks? Is it haunted? If we look inside will it melt our faces like the Ark of the Covenant? The public is entitled to see all the nooks and crannies and read the fine print before the spending Kraken is released.
Some have suggested moving the deadline for passage so the people voting on the bill have time to, y’know, read it. That sounds good in theory, but if the governor and party leadership are anything like, say, your local editorial cartoonist they’ll use the gift of an extended deadline to procrastinate further and end up mushing something together at the last minute anyway. Hypothetically speaking.
