A whooping crane chick hatched at the Dallas Zoo on June 10 as part of the zoo's conservation efforts.
, the goal is to eventually release cranes hatched in Dallas to the birds’ natural habitats. This chick brought the zoo one step closer to that goal with the plan of releasing it into the wild with the Louisiana population this fall.
In an effort to complete a successful release, zoologists are taking precautions to minimize the chick’s interactions with humans.“With decades of conservation efforts, whooping cranes, which were once on the brink of extinction, are now on the path to recovery, and we are proud to join the effort to save this iconic species from the threat of extinction,” the zoo said on social media.
