Texas State focused on consistency after milestone upset of Appalachian State
Texas State quarterback Layne Hatcher throws against the Baylor Bears in the first half at McLane Stadium on Sept. 17 in Waco.As Texas State coach Jake Spavital gathered the Bobcats for a meeting ahead of Tuesday’s practice, the largest word on his Power Point presentation was “consistency.”
Spavital called the upset a “big-time moment for our program,” proving what the Bobcats are capable of when they hit his yearlong aims of playing efficient, clean and complementary football. Texas State entered Saturday with losses to No. 25 James Madison, Baylor and Nevada by an average margin of 28.7 points. The Bobcats’ two wins were lopsided results against FCS opponent Houston Christian and FBS bottom-feeder Florida International.
Spavital felt the energy early in the third quarter, stressing about keeping the Bobcats on the sideline after defensive back Tory Spears returned an interception 94 yards for a touchdown and a 30-3 lead. Spavital pointed much of the credit to a player-driven leadership group that holds the rest of the Bobcats accountable and “wants to change this place, like we always talk about.”
