With an assist from Gov. Greg Abbott, House Republican leaders on Tuesday blamed House Democrats for slowing the chamber’s work on school choice, teacher...
With only a week left for passing bills in the special session, the blame game is red hot as proposals for school funding, teacher raises and voucherlike efforts remain in limbo.
The trio of bills has passed the House. But if House Democrats deny a quorum in coming days, the bills can’t proceed to Abbott’s desk unless the Senate makes no changes to them.On Tuesday, Democrats accused Republicans of trying to deflect attention from their own dysfunction, which they said has included yearlong neglect of teachers and inability to agree on a voucherlike proposal.
Shortly after noon Tuesday, in separate but almost simultaneous announcements, Abbott and Buckley said they have found a way out of their impasse on education savings accounts, school funding and accountability.Abbott issued a press release and a proclamation expanding the session’s agenda to include House-requested matters, which included teacher compensation, special education, early childhood learning and virtual education.
Goldman and House Democratic Caucus Chairman Trey Martinez Fischer of San Antonio blamed the other’s party caucus. The governor’s announcement was light on specifics and, without a filed bill, it’s unclear what exactly the proposed legislation would do for public schools. Ovidia Molina, president of the Texas State Teachers Association, said teachers remain “woefully underpaid” and welcomed a widening of the session’s agenda. However, Molina said her group will continue opposing a school funding or teacher pay bill that includes an education savings account.
