Dan Crenshaw said it is obviously wrong for former President Donald Trump to keep classified information at his estate, but that does not justify the way the Justice Department has handled the matter.
“This is hard to justify what the Department of Justice did here,” said Crenshaw, whose 2nd Congressional District includes parts of Northwest Harris County and parts of Montgomery County. Crenshaw, a retired Navy SEAL, said he has a difficult time believing that if Trump had classified documents still in his possession that it was intentional or nefarious.
But don’t mistake his words as meaning he’s about to join the “defund the FBI” calls coming from Republicans including U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia. Asked about conservatives who want to defund the FBI and people threatening FBI agents with violence, Crenshaw said they are wrong. He likened Greene’s push to U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s support for defund-the-police measures in the wake of the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
“Marjorie and AOC can go and join the defund the law enforcement club if they want,” Crenshaw said. “99 percent of Republicans are not on that train.”
