Louisiana coach Matt Deggs has run up against historic hitting steaks before. He'll do so again Friday against Texas and Dylan Campbell in the NCAA tournament.
Jared Thomas, Peyton Powell and the Longhorns had plenty to celebrate in a strong regular season. But the Longhorns enter the NCAA Coral Gables regional on a two-game slide.Louisiana coach Matt Deggs is no stranger to historic hitting streaks.
Thirteen years later, Deggs and the third-seeded Ragin’ Cajuns are in the same regional, playing in the same stadium, preparing to face No. 2 seed Texas and junior outfielder Dylan Campbell, currently riding a 35-game hitting streak that’s tied for the longest in Big 12 history. Streak aside, Deggs and the Aggies had no trouble dispatching FIU and Wittels all those years ago. They routed the Panthers 17-3 before bowing out against host Miami in the regional final.
“Very, very balanced and very dynamic,” Deggs said of Texas. “Their numbers are similar to ours. So, it should be a great matchup. They’re got a lot of really good players. And the lefty they’re starting tomorrow can really pitch.”Texas is hitting .297 and averaging 1.4 home runs and 7.3 runs per game with a 4.13 team ERA. Louisiana is hitting .288 and averaging 1.06 home runs and 7.1 runs per game with a 4.75 team ERA.
