Texas is 4-0 under acting coach Rodney Terry but stakes get higher as conference play...

Texas and guard Marcus Carr are trying to stay focused on court while school waits to make decision on future of coach Chris Beard.AUSTIN — No. 6 Texas opens Big 12 play Saturday against Oklahoma at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman. For the Longhorns , it will mark Game 5 with associate head coach Rodney Terry serving as the team’s acting head coach.

Perry Minton, Beard’s lawyer, has maintained his client’s innocence and refuted the statements logged in the arrest affidavit. On the night of the incident the alleged victim, Beard’s fiancée Randi Trew, told responding Austin Police Department officers the 49-year-old Texas coach"snapped" and strangled, bit and dragged her off a bed in their shared Austin residence.

Beard has an emergency protective order active against him until Feb. 10, 2023, and he’s currently awaiting a Jan. 18 court hearing. And despite Trew’s recent statement that Beard acted in “self-defense,” the Travis County district attorney José Garza can still choose to prosecute the case and present its findings to a grand jury following the office’s investigation, which could take months.

The University said it is aware of Trew’s statement and declined further comment amid its own internal investigation. A team spokesman confirmed Terry, now 4-0 as acting head coach, will continue to lead the team during Beard’s suspension. The Longhorns remain a Final Four contender, Beard or no Beard. They’re one of 14 teams with no more than one loss and own a 2-1 record against teams ranked in the Associated Press top 25.
