Texas One Fund president Patrick 'Wheels' Smith believes the state's new name, image and likeness bill will be a boon for Longhorn student-athletes.
Texas governor Greg Abbott recently signed a bill that will expand name, image and likeness opportunities for student-athletes and weaken the NCAA’s authority over state universities. Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte recently lauded the bill in his"Forty Acres Insider" newsletter.AUSTIN – A new state law intended to expand name, image and likeness opportunities for student-athletes and weaken the NCAA’s authority over Texas universities goes into effect on July 1.
Austin area attorney and Texas One Fund president Patrick “Wheels” Smith spoke with the Express-News about how the new legislation could impact NIL collectives like the one he oversees and whether a new memo from the IRS will have any bearing on the way these groups operate in the near future. "But it does seem like there’s going to be a lot of positives out of here in terms of increasing donation and really helping bolster NIL. Which we believe, on our end, really is going to benefit not only our student-athletes but having more opportunities to benefit these charities around Central Texas.""So just in terms of the Texas One Fund, we have a weekly call with them to make sure everything we're doing aligns with state, federal, NCAA law to whatever degree.
