Texas won the first game at the new Moody Center arena, 72-57. AUSTIN – Late last April, Texas baseball loaded up the buses and trekked south to Edinburg for the first time in 51 years.
So this past offseason, the Texas and UTRGV hoops programs formulated a plan to hold the “Leon Black Classic” in Edinburg’s Bert Ogden Arena. On Monday, UTRGV will play Western Illinois at 5 p.m. and No. 11 Texas will face Northern Arizona at 7:30. Texas started this multi-team event last season as a way to honor the late Leon Black, who passed away last year at the age of 89. Black was a three-year letterwinner who eventually returned to work as an assistant under Harold Bradley before serving as the Longhorns’ head coach from 1967-76.
The Vaqueros will face Texas in the second segment of the Leon Black Classic Saturday afternoon. That game will be played inside Gregory Gymnasium instead of the Moody Center, another once-a-year deal that began last season.
