A Travis County judge on Friday temporarily blocked a new policy that requires Texas CPS to investigate reports of parents who help transgender children access gender-affirming care as potential child abuse, saying that Gov. Greg Abbott overstepped.
, and Legacy Community Health has said it’s “analyzing available options.” Several months earlier another program in Dallas pulled its website and halted services to new patients.
Abbott ordered the investigations to begin late last month, citing a nonbinding opinion by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who concluded that sex “reassignment surgery,” as well as medications, such as puberty blockers, fall under the state’s broad definition of child abuse. Despite Paxton’s focus on surgery, that medical option is rarely offered to patients who are under 18.
“It’s so important that we look up with pride and confidence at the organization” that sets standards for safety for Texas children, said Marie Catrett, who said she has worked as a child care provider for 25 years. “And now I’m looking at this organization possibly being used as a political tool, again, against transgender children. … Your job is not to be political. Your job is to advocate for the safety of children based on facts, based on science, and not for political reasons.
Both said the treatments are safe and effective and supported by medical research and standards of care set by national and international organizations. “Plaintiffs are merely fearful at this point of any potential harm that may come to them because of a report or investigation,” said Corbello, who added that the 16-year-old at the center of the case has so far had “one meeting with an investigator and nothing further.”65 U.S. companies blast Abbott’s push to investigate therapy for transgender kids as child abuse
