The address from Gov. Greg Abbott, which acknowledged the need to change systemic injustices, was in stark contrast to President Donald Trump’s speech Monday.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, the Republican head of government in the nation’s second-largest state, took an entirely different tone Tuesday addressing the protests following George Floyd’s death than what was heard from President Donald Trump Monday, with Abbott calling for calm but also saying, “Our work will not end until justice, fairness and equality become a reality.”Texas businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic at a press conference at the Texas State Capitol on May 18, 2020 in Austin, Texas.
Abbott said the state has deployed over 1,000 officers from the Department of Public Safety into the Dallas-Ft. Worth area alone, as well as the Texas National Guard, and is working with the four U.S. Attorneys in Texas to prosecute rioters, many of which he said are coming from other states.
