Texas freedom gas comes to the rescue in Europe | Opinion

Numerous rigs stand idle at the Midland County Line Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, in Midland. The energy subtext of the Russian invasion of Ukraine is hard to miss. The heavy dependence of European consumers on Russian oil and gas over the decades has funded and emboldened Putin’s regime while facilitating European hesitancy in the face of bad behavior.

European oil consumption is driven by industrial needs and transportation. Industrial uses of oil are the highest-value and hardest to displace, so policymakers should emphasize transportation alternatives. City leaders should double-down on their already successful mass transit systems and national governments should incentivize rapid adoption of electric vehicles and work-from-home programs.

Biogas production can be accelerated by converting food and agricultural waste streams into methane that can displace some conventional gas. Since we have such a robust wind and solar resource, we should build more power plants that harness them as quickly as possible to reduce our in-state gas consumption, which frees up more gas to export to Europe. And the volumes are big enough to make a difference.

If all that wind and solar generated electricity displaces gas consumption at power plants, that means Texas could single-handedly increase American liquefied natural gas exports to Europe by as much as 30%. Freedom molecules to the rescue!
