A Texas bill would let people sue drag queens who perform in front of minors.
A Republican lawmaker is seeking to restrict drag performances in Texas by pushing for a bill that would allow people to sue those who perform in drag in front of a minor.was filed by Rep. Steve Toth, R-Woodlands, on Friday. If passed by the Texas Legislature, it would allow someone to bring legal action against people in drag if they attend an event as a minor"in which a performer exhibits a gender that is different from the performer’s gender recorded at birth.
“The language is so broad that traditional theater venues, productions of Shakespeare, all kinds of plays where a trans performer or even a cis performer is acting out a role that involves cross dressing would also be on the chopping block,” Gooch said.
Toth declined an interview with The Texas Newsroom on Tuesday morning. His office didn't reply to a detailed list of questions regarding the measure.before the Texas Legislature would classify drag performances as sexually oriented businesses and make host venues pay additional taxes. “Where is the limit to what they are trying to impose?” Gooch asked. “In some ways, it's very much a gender police where lawmakers are imposing their own ideas about what gender should look like on performers across the state.”

Texas Republicans propose state immigration police forceRepublican lawmakers in Texas are proposing legislation that would make it a state felony to cross the border from Mexico illegally and create a new border police force that could deputize private citizens, the latest in the state's continued push to test the limits of the federal government's authority over immigration. Civil rights organizations, immigration advocates and Democrats immediately decried the proposals, which began drawing attention after Friday's deadline for filing bills in Texas' ongoing biennial legislative session. “I think the underlying fact that it is going to allow people to question our being American in our border communities and across Texas is unacceptable,” said Texas state Rep. Victoria Neave Criado, chairwoman of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus.
