The 'ghost pipes' are still remembered today
A terrifying TV show that "scared the life out of" a generation is still remembered after over three decades.
Ahead of Halloween, 31 years after the show first aired, ECHO readers have been sharing their memories of the spooky show. Many reminisced about how scared they were watching as kids and the famous "pipes noises" which were revealed to be the ghost sounds at the end of the show. Yvonne Holden wrote: "It was scary back then, loved it." Lynne Byrne wrote: "It terrified the life out of me at the time, I missed the very beginning I think, and I thought it was real."
Helen Coulston commented: "As a kid I was convinced this was real. Loved it but was petrified too. Watched bits of it on YouTube a few years ago. Would love see if my kids believe it's real. Xx." Jamie Lee Ireland posted: "I was about seven and we watched it then my mum sent me to bed cause she said it was far too scary." Nikki Parker said: "Remember it well. Scared the hell out of me at the time!.
Ghostwatch's writer Stephen Volk has since spoken out about the show. "You couldn't do what we did nowadays and get away with it," he told the Daily Record. "People would know in 30 seconds what was going on really." Smith can be heard asking after his wife's safety and Parkinson, with only half his face showing on camera, begins to sing a nursery rhyme before being possessed by the voice of Pipes. Following the show's broadcast, viewers duped by the hoax shown expressed their anger in droves.About 30,000 complaints were made to the BBC, including allegedly Parkinson's mum and a woman who claimed it had induced her labour.
The 18-year-old, who had learning difficulties, took his own life after his parents said he was 'hypnotised and obsessed' with Ghostwatch. The complaint, however, was not upheld by what is now Ofcom. In 1994, Simons and Silveria published a report in the British Medical Journal that described cases of PTSD in two 10-year old boys caused by Ghostwatch.
