We chat with TheClearing stars Teresa Palmer and Miranda Otto about their new psychological thriller series, which is coming to hulu, and the joys of working in their home country of Australia:
The world of Australian cults is being explored with The Clearing. Inspired by both J.P. Pomare's novel In the Clearing and the real-life group The Family, governed by female charismatic leader Anne Hamilton-Byrne, the psychological thriller series revolves around a woman who is forced to face the demons of her past to save young girls being kidnapped by a cult.
Ahead of the show's premiere, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with stars Teresa Palmer and Miranda Otto to discuss The Clearing, getting to the heart of their characters, returning to their home country of Australia, and more. Miranda Otto: I hadn't read the book, no, I wasn't aware of it. But then I found out that it had been quite a hit and quite a bidding war to get the book, so I was really just coming to it from the script very much. And, like Teresa, I have a huge obsessive interest in cults, so I've watched a lot of stuff and read a lot of stuff over the years, so it really very much tapped into my wheelhouse. The scripts were just so great, and clever, and intricate, and layered, I was totally in.
I loved her bravery, I thought it was so interesting. And then of course, as Miranda said, this is a story of redemption, and that's what really drove me as a performer, and it carries this character the whole way through, she has this burning desire for justice, and to really start to unpack the fractured layers of herself. And it's [about] healing, I love watching her evolution.
I can only imagine! As a fan of both of your works, I find it so interesting that this also gives you the chance to go back home, in a sense, and film in your native country of Australia and use your natural accents. What was it like for both of you, especially since you've both been a part of so many American productions in the past few years, and using a boring accent like my own?
Miranda Otto: Yeah, I went back for a couple of years during the pandemic, and started to work a little bit more back in Australia, which was so nice. So many of the things that I've worked on there have been stories about things that I've known about, like I did a show that was about the bushfires. It's really nice to go back to the source in that way, it's been really nice to go back and tell some Australian stories.
