Tennessee wildlife agency capture and relocate 500-pound bear
The bear, which was living near Tusculum University, had been in the area for a few years and had regular access to garbage, birdseed, and pet food. After the bear ramped up its activity and property damage last year, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency decided to stop it in its tracks and relocate it, the agency said in a social media post.
Officers of the agency were able to free-range tranquilize the bear, which they named Big Bruin, and relocate it with the help of the Greeneville Fire Department to a remote area of the Cherokee National Forest. Pictured in the social media post, Big Bruin is at the upper limit of a black bear's size, according to the agency. To help prevent safety concerns with black bears in towns, people are advised by the agency not to store food, garbage, or other recyclables in areas accessible to bears and not to feed birds or other wildlife where bears are active. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has not yet responded to the Washington Examiner's request for a photo of Big Bruin.
