Former grade school site to be transferred to park district gurneeparkdistrict villageofgunree
Now, 10 years after it was acquired for flood control, Lake County is set to officially transfer three parcels where Gurnee Grade School once stood to the Gurnee Park District.
In 2013, about 450 students were relocated and Lake County used $3.2 million in federal disaster funds distributed by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to buy and demolish the school and maintenance building on 5.76 acres. A commemorative display featuring historical information about Gurnee Grade School and area flooding also was installed.
Gurnee has partnered in many buyouts programs in the area, mostly led by the stormwater agency, according to Austin Pollack, assistant to the village administrator.
