Man United went into the international break with a much-needed win against Brentford after a dismal run of performances.
Somewhere in a parallel universe, Manchester United sold Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay to West Ham in the summer and the headlines during the international break revolved around Erik ten Hag's increasingly uncertain future.
McTominay did brilliantly to score both goals off the bench and Maguire played his part with his assist for the second. The winning goal was ironically a goal you might expect to see from a West Ham side managed by David Moyes. United have suffered six defeats in 11 games in all competitions and for some perspective on that dismal run of performances, a P45 was handed to Jose Mourinho in December 2018 after suffering eight defeats in 24 matches.
The Dutchman is not blameless and there are small tactical doubts bubbling under the surface, but he didn't sound like a manager that feared his future when asked about his position after the Galatasaray defeat. If those final few minutes against Brentford, a game which came immediately after Galatasaray, never happened, that message of togetherness and unity in the face of adversity would have been drowned out by toxicity.
United are five points behind Liverpool in fourth position and anything but a win against a struggling Sheffield United will be unacceptable because they're relegation fodder and have conceded the most league goals .
