Promises to secure the border and crack down on Illegal immigration are central to the political identity of Trump and today’s Republican party.
Cruz faces a competitive contest this fall against U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, who says the senator has favored partisan politics over real solutions.
“Today, as a result of Joe Biden’s presidency, your family is less safe, your children are less safe. The country is less safe,” Cruz said. “But here’s the good news. We can fix it. And when Donald Trump is president, we will fix it.” Cruz said Tuesday night that 11.5 million people have crossed the border illegally during Biden’s presidency. That number of people would fill 639 arenas with an 18,000-person capacity, like the one where delegates are meeting this week, he said.
