Austin professor & conservationist honors roadkill to foster environmental empathy
Heat index values up to 109 are possible in Central & North Texas. A Heat Advisory is in effect for Milam County through 8 pm Thursday.Dr. Amanda Stronza of Austin has spent the last five years transforming a unique and challenging hobby into a heartfelt mission.
"It feels very natural to me to want to take an animal off the road," Dr. Stronza explains. "I stop and lift raccoons, armadillos, coyotes, squirrels, and snakes and put them in a quieter, more peaceful place to rest."Dr. Stronza, a professor at Texas A&M, began this practice in 2019 when she encountered a dead squirrel on the hike-and-bike trail around Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin.
"I take photos and write about the animals' lives. They're almost like eulogies or elegies. I detail where I found the animal and how I felt creating the memorial."
