If anyone can bring back the controversial shoe, it’s Taylor Swift.
After what felt like an eternity of waiting Taylor Swift released 1989 . In conjunction with the album release, Swift dropped a series of photos on Instagram, captioned “My name is Taylor and I was born in 1989.” The pictures feature the singer traipsing along an empty beach in a white tank top and light-wash blue jeans – an album-friendly colour palette. But what really catches the eye appears on slide five in a photo of Swift taken from above.
By the middle of the decade, Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Fiorucci were all selling them. They stayed popular in the ’90s and ’00s, and had an American Apparel-backed reboot in the 2010s Indie Sleaze era. Nowadays, the style has returned in different forms, like the Melissa X Y/Project 3-D floral jelly heels, or Telfar’s logo jelly slides. The sheer pink fisherman sandals are an almost jarring date stamp in Swift’s photo series. The rest of her photos are timeless.
