Tax Season 2023: IRSNews employers of Jan. 31 deadline to file wage statements
Employers only have five days left to file copies of their 2022 Form W-2, wage and tax statements, along with their Form W-3, transmittal of wage and tax statements, with the Social Security Administration. The deadline, set for Jan. 31, will apply to all employers regardless of if they are filing by paper or electronically, according to the IRS.A quickly approaching deadline will also require employers to provide copies B, C, and 2 of Form W-2 to all of their employees.
A precaution the IRS has informed employers of is to double-check that the employer identification number on their wage statements, tax statements, and payroll tax returns matches the same identification number the IRS assigned to their business. Failure to do this and using numbers that do not match can delay the filing of an employer's tax returns.
Both the IRS and the SSA recommend filing all of their statements online due to it being the most expedient form of filing. If an employer is filing 250 or more information returns, e-filing is their only option.If an employer is unable to meet the deadline for Jan. 31, they can file an extension that will give them an extra 30 days.
A separate extension file must be filled out if the employer needs extra time to issue all required forms and statements to its employees.
