Tarrant Appraisal District Director of Information Systems Cal Wood was caught advocating for lying to the press. That's a bad look for any government...
reports, state Rep. Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth, filed a bill that would have abolished the Tarrant Appraisal District. Then, earlier this month, Chief Appraiser Jeff Law narrowly escaped a vote of no confidence.
So the spotlight is shining bright. And that’s precisely when government officials feel tempted to hide. Wood has been suspended, pending an investigation. If that inquiry confirms the allegations against him, Wood should lose his job. Any government official, no matter how obscure, who promotes lying to the press should be removed. Because this isn’t really about lying to the press; it’s about lying to the public that deserves transparency in government.
In an essay published after the publication of the Pentagon Papers in 1971, political philosopher Hannah Arendt wrote: “Truthfulness has never been counted among the political virtues, and lies have always been regarded as justifiable tools in political dealings.”for breaking this story and exposing tolerance of lies in at least one government body. As long as government keeps obscuring the truth, we need journalists to keep exposing it.
