'Taking my mum to see the Queen made me realise why she leaves the monarchy at a high-water mark' ✍️ ColeMoreton for ipaperviews
As the rain fell on people weeping at the gates of Buckingham Palace on Thursday evening, the actor Robert Lindsay posted a short, bewildered note on social media. “Why oh why do I feel I’ve lost my parents again?”
So what was – and is – going on? Why does the death of the Queen feel so complicated and bring up unexpected emotions for so many of us, even those who chafe against the tone of some tributes or have the feeling that an hereditary monarchy is not the way to run a fair, just nation of equals? She could have walked away from it all like her uncle, done it badly or treated her subjects with contempt, like kings and queens before her; but Elizabeth chose to see herself as a servant.
The stories swirl around us in these days of exhaustive recollection, but it is worth remembering that her first broadcast was with her sister Margaret to the children of Britain, as bombs fell during the Blitz. She just kept going, through civil unrest and economic crises, terrorist attacks and Covid. The result was a high water mark of popularity for the modern monarchy, as her subjects expressed a personal affection for her that not even Victoria could have dreamed of.
