Last week, the 2023 NFL Draft featured a record 43 trades. Some teams moved up to get their guys while other teams were more willing to pick up some additional draft capital and traded back. Let’s take a closer look at two teams’ trades and trade strategies and how their current roster affected those strategies.to happen once the 2023 NFL Draft got underway.
They didn’t stop there, though. Three picks later, they used some of the draft capital they had just picked up from the Texans to trade back into the top 10 for offensive tackleTo begin the second day of the draft, the Cardinals moved back yet again in a trade with the Tennessee Titans, picking up two 2023 picks and a 2024 third-rounder along the way. And after starting Day 2 with a trade-back, it was only fitting that the Cardinals ended it with another one.
Ultimately, Arizona’s new regime led by general manager Monti Ossenfort showed that they weren’t afraid to wheel and deal to not only build up draft capital by trading back but also trade up to get their guys when they could. By the end of the draft, Ossenfort and Co. had picked up one of the best offensive tackles availablethree top-100 picks in next year’s draft.
Philadelphia got started before the draft, bringing in an extra third-round pick from the Cardinals as compensation for the latter team’s tampering in their hire of new head coach Jonathan Gannon.
When the Eagles saw chances to bring in great players, even if they didn’t fit a pressing need, they took advantage by spending future draft capital to move up and acquire those great players. That’s how Super Bowl contenders stay in a position of contention, and the Eagles were able to do it without reaching the extreme “F them picks” mentality that the 49ers and Rams seem to have adopted in recent years.
