Easter weekend marks the beginning of the tornado season and forecasters are predicting severe storms, twisters and flooding for parts of the country.
Severe thunderstorms, fed by warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, are expected to pound Texas on Saturday and begin pushing eastward, setting up the likelihood of damaging hail, winds and tornadoes forThe storm system is then expected to push up the Atlantic coast on Monday.
“This could be one of our bigger events we’ve had in a long time around here. Take this seriously,” weather service forecaster Gary Goggins said in a public briefing broadcast on Facebook Live from the agency’s Birmingham-area office on Saturday. The National Weather Service office in Jackson told residents to brace for the possibility of wind gusts up to 70 mph and tennis ball-sized hail through Sunday evening.
The National Weather Service says a zone around Waco, in central Texas, is particularly vulnerable to severe thunderstorms.
