'People looked at us as if we were crazy, but it turned out that our effort became the major after-school project' in the city, the author writes

By James K. Aumack

This was my part-time job that helped to support my family. As it turned out, though, this effort was an enormous success, and our first grant was for almost $300,000. Each and every year, we added something to attract more children. Six of our 10 classroom teachers were also issued a 15-passenger van to pick up and drop off students from their individual schools or from their homes in the summer session and also in the winter after school project. All teachers who were also van drivers were required to obtain a Class 2 state driver’s license, which allowed them to legally transport children to and from the project.

Our efforts extended for well over 25 years and benefited hundreds of minority children and their parents as well. During this time, we also achieved federal CETA grants to train unemployed adults. This was also a resounding success. Forty-nine of our first 50 adults in this part of our project gained employment because of our training. We hired the last one and three years later she married and moved to the West Coast with her husband.
