The Shanghai native leads the Houston Symphony at Miller Outdoor Theatre on July 9.

“He makes the whole rehearsal very positive and very inspiring,” she reflects. “He’s patient. He knows how to work with people, how to fix problems, how to make the music lively. I'm very grateful for those two years — very, very, very precious to me.”

“It’s very supportive,” she affirms. “It’s very warm. I haven't worked with so many orchestras, but I’ve heard not every orchestra is like that. I just really enjoying making music with these wonderful musicians. It’s just very positive, welcoming, warm — a big family, so I feel so lucky to be one of the members.”

“Totally different personality — very detailed, very musical, very patient,” Bao says. “I hope he will lead us to another level.” With Orozco-Estrada unable to enter the U.S. due to COVID restrictions, she conducted opening night of the orchestra’s 2020-21 classical season. Last month she helmed the Summer Neighborhood Concerts series at three Houston-area locations, and on Saturday will conduct the final installment of Summer Symphony Nights at Miller Outdoor Theatre, leading an evening of Prokofiev, Mendelssohn, and his sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel.
