Local photographer Allee Wallace, 87, smiles as he is honored by Bexar County during a ceremony at the Bexar County Courthouse, Friday, Feb. 25, 2022. Wallace has documented the Martin Luther King March and his photos make up the exhibit, “I Was There.” The public can view more than 70 of his images at the Bexar Archive Building’s Presidio Gallery. The exhibit runs through March 11, 2022, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

She sent the 8-year-old to the drugstore with $10 to buy a camera. The boy bought a Kodak Brownie Starmite that fit in the palm of his hand. He invested hours into a hobby that became his calling and passport to a world of possibilities. “I’m just happy that we could have an exhibit,” Wallace, 87, said. “It’s not by myself that I could do all of this. I realized all of my work is not in vain.”Wallace’s art has been displayed at the Witte Museum and the San Antonio International Airport. His resume includes Juneteenth celebrations and working more than 16 years as a staff photographer for UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures.
