The penultimate race of the 2023 Super Formula season has been red-flagged following a major incident between Hiroki Otsu and Ukyo Sasahara.
Otsu was trying to make a move on Sasahara for 17th place on lap 4 when the two came to blows at 130R, with both spinning heavily into the barriers. While Otsu’s Nakajima car had a normal impact with the barriers, Sasahara’s TOM'S machine flew into the catch fencing before coming to a rest. Otsu was seen walking away from the car in the aftermath of the crash, while Sasahara was reported as conscious and has been taken to the medical centre for a check-up.
A safety car was immediately deployed to neutralise the field, before a decision was taken to stop the race altogether, with all remaining cars taking to the grid. Marshals have begun work on repairing the barriers, but it remains unclear when the race can resume. Mugen’s Tomoki Nojiri held the lead with six of the 31 laps completed, with Sasahara’s team-mate Ritomo Miyata holding second after repassing the Dandelion entry of Kakunoshin Ota.
