An organization representing nurse practitioners says many of their members are under\u002Demployed in their field right now.

According to the survey, there are currently 320 practicing NPs and students enrolled in NP programs in the province. A total of 124 responded to the survey.

“We have a body of nurse practitioners who are immediately available to step up and help with filling some of these gaps that we’re seeing in health care,” Schmalenberg said. “When you go check in somewhere and they asked you who your family doctor is, that’s me for people out here,” she said. For example, if someone hurts their leg playing football this weekend in Raymore, you’d likely go to Schmalenberg, who would be able assess their needs, decide if they needed any diagnostic imaging, if a physiotherapist was needed, etc.

From her perspective, looking at overburdened emergency rooms she wonders how many people go there because they don’t have a primary care provider. Prior to the pandemic she says“How many people go to because that’s the only place they are able to access healthcare?” asked Schmalenberg.

Casey — who worked for MinuteClinic since 2018, primarily at a facility in Alexandria — appealed to the company, saying her Catholic faith teaches her that life begins at conception and she could not provide care in violation of that principle.
