Survey: 40% of San Diego County arrestees report having mental health diagnoses [Breaking]
. People who have been arrested are approached within 48 hours of being booked into jail, and, if they agree to participate, are asked a series of questions about their drug use, mental health history and socioeconomic status.Women and homeless people were more likely to report having a mental health diagnosis than men and housed individuals.
Nearly 70 percent of people who reported having a mental health diagnosis also reported having suicidal thoughts or experiencing suicidal ideation — a much higher percentage than the 20 percent of people without a diagnosis who reported experienced those kinds of thoughts. “These statistics emphasize the urgent need for targeted mental health support to address the increased risk of suicide in this population,” according to the May report.
