The new land is both completely modern and totally nostalgic.
You enter Super Nintendo World just like Mario does, through a warp pipe. As soon as I heard the unmistakable sound effect that happens when a character sinks into a pipe in the game, I felt totally transported: into the world of Mario and into my happiest, earliest memories of playing his games. I was expecting the Nintendo part of it. I was definitely not expecting the feeling of my whole childhood coming alive.
Out the other side of the pipe, just like a Super Mario Bros. character would, you find yourself in a Technicolor dreamscape where you're a character in a video game and the world before you is waiting to be conquered with the taps of the A and B buttons.
I raised my hand in the Mario pose. “Power up, Mario!” the team member taking the photo said, indicating to him to raise his hand too. “That’s-a gonna be a good one!” Mario added. When I met Peach, she bowed, and I did the same. “It’s so nice to meet another princess!” she said. It shouldn’t have made me so happy, but the joy was overwhelming. I looked back at those photos when I got home and truly couldn’t believe how exuberant I looked. “Someone please invent time travel,” I thought to myself, “so I can go tell my 10-year-old self it’s all going to be OK.”
Around the land, there are three “key challenges,” which are physical minigames. Each time you win one, you get a key; once you have all three, you’re allowed into Bowser Jr.’s castle, to defeat the lesser villain of the land. This is where it gets really, really good. The Bowser Jr. game doesn’t put you inside a video game with virtual reality — it puts youinto a video game. You stand in front of a giant screen, with a light behind you that projects your shadow onto it.
