The Prime Minister last week snuffed out mounting speculation that he was considering going to the country on the same day as theThe Tory leader is battling to regain control over his fractious party amid swirling rumours that he couldBut a minister suggested the decision to push back polling day until later in the year threatened to backfire against Sunak due to gloomy forecasts for the Tories at the local elections.
A former minister suggested the Prime Minister will struggle to continue to hold out until the autumn, as the pressures of running the country, governing his party and campaigning across the country will take their toll. Ben Wallace, the former Defence Secretary, on Monday criticised those plotting to remove the Prime Minister, insisting that it was too late to replace him before the election.
“Rishi Sunak is the Prime Minister. He set out his plan. He set out his idea and vision, which I think is to effectively, quite rightly, fix the economy, get inflation down. If we get inflation down, we can see interest rates drop. Whether colleagues are happy with him or not, it’s too late, right. Get on with it.”
