A new study suggests keeping your ticker in shape could help you maintain cognitive health.

This study looked at data collected by the Rush Memory and Aging Project—an ongoing study from Rush University that gathers information on memory, mobility, and strength in older adults. They selected 1,588 participants who had not been diagnosed withParticipants were tested on recall of everyday events, long-term and short-term memory capabilities, the capacity to identify visual and spatial relationships among objects, and the ability to accurately compare items like numbers and patterns.

Although there are some medications that can help to slow progression of dementia and Alzheimer’s to some degree, there are no treatments yet considered effective enough to make a considerable difference, according to lead study author Weili Xu, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Tianjin Medical University in China.

The specific reason why wasn’t covered in the study, but Xu noted that previous research suggests better heart health could be indicative of beneficial habits that have been shown to help with brain function, such as not smoking, moderate-to-low alcohol consumption, exercising regularly, getting adequate sleep, and eating a
